March Madness On the Sands: Beach Volleyball in So Cal

March Madness On the Sands: Beach Volleyball in So Cal

You read it right, that’s what I’m calling the past month of beach volleyball in Southern California, this March: March Madness on the Sands.

It’s been a crazy month, filled with some of the very best beach volleyball teams, visiting the So Cal area. Fans of this sport have been treated to several TOP 10 teams, and top 20 teams, all competing at the highest levels. One of the things I enjoy personally about watching beach volleyball, is these athletes take it seriously. None of them are playing around when the whistle blows.

No one is backing down – if you enjoy Competitive Sports – You’re gonna love beach volleyball.

Early in March, we were able to attend the MPSF Midseason Rumble, at USC. This was a two day event, that was also taking place at UCLA.  Some teams played both days at USC, and a handful of teams swapped locations. Stanford came to town as the #1 team in the nation, but would fall to #2 UCLA on the last day of the  MPSF, at UCLA.  Most of our images from USC are now up, and you can see them here:

The following week, UCLA was now the new #1 – and we caught them at East Meets West.

In town for that 2 day beach volleyball event, were also several top teams. Including Cal, who we saw the previous week at USC, and Texas. One of the newer beach volleyball programs, (just their 4th season) Texas has already made their presence known.  Attracting the former head coach of UCLA, Stein Metzger to guide them from the start along with several talented beach ballers who have helped make them a force. LSU who is always a tough team, showed they still have that grit.

We also got to see More Top Teams in action, in March: Including Long Beach State, who recently moved into the top 10, after a successful 5-1 weekend at the Big West Challenge. But we saw them earlier in the month, along with LMU – and got a good look at Cal and Hawaii. Most of these teams, will be in Huntsville, Alabama competing for it all, in May.

What a MONTH it has been for beach volleyball, here in So Cal.

March Madness isn’t just happening in college basketball, we are seeing it in college beach volleyball as well. Hopefully you have gotten out to enjoy the sun, and the competition on the sands!  Stay tuned for more images, And video clips from this exciting ‘Mad’ month!
